Apology
As Bishop of the Diocese I apologise to those who have suffered abuse either as children or adults from clergy or church workers in the Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn. I am deeply saddened these terrible actions have occurred, and apologise for the harm and distress they have caused.
Such behaviour is contrary to the way of Jesus who taught us to love our neighbour and care for the vulnerable. Whenever the church has fallen short of his standards we have betrayed the trust placed in us.
Abuse hurts survivors, their families, and the network of friendships. As part of my role I have met with survivors of abuse which has made me aware of the long-term damage these actions cause. I have also been impressed by the courage of survivors in naming their abuse and seeking justice for themselves and for others.
If you have experienced abuse in our Diocese, I want you to know you are not to blame.
Our Diocese has adopted thorough procedures for screening and assessing those who exercise ministry, or who seek ordination in the Diocese, as well as conducting regular training for clergy and volunteers in abuse prevention. We also have an externally operated Helpline 1800 070 511 helpline@safercommunities.net.au for survivors who are seeking assistance with redress.
There is no place for abuse in the Church and we are committed to doing everything we can to make sure that the Church is a safe place for all.
