Royal Commission into Institutional Response to Child Sexual Abuse – A Response from the Diocese

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses into Child Sexual Abuse has rightly shone a light onto our practices: those practices which were abusive, those practices which allowed abuse to occur and those practices that failed to provide the appropriate response following abuse.

We are committed to responding justly and compassionately to those who have been abused by clergy and lay leaders in our diocese. We wish to respond in a way that prioritises the needs of those who have suffered abuse over the needs of the institution.

We apologise unreservedly for abuse that has occurred and invite those who wish to report an incident or seek advice to call our ‘Safe Ministry Helpline’ on 1800 070 511.

A prayer

God of endless love, ever caring, ever strong, always present, always just: You gave your only Son to save us through his death and resurrection.

Lord Jesus, shepherd of peace, comfort all who have been hurt in body, mind, and spirit by those who betrayed the trust placed in them; hear our cries as we agonise over the harm done to our sisters and brothers.

Breathe wisdom into our prayers, soothe restless hearts with hope, steady shaken spirits with faith: Show us the way to justice and wholeness, enlightened by truth and enfolded in your mercy.

Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people’s wounds and transform our brokenness. Grant us courage and wisdom, humility and grace, so that we may act with justice and find peace in you. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
